Dr Natasha Thandrayen is very interested in the detrimental effects of poor sleep, and the effect this can have on life. She has undertaken further training in Insomnia at Oxford University, and is passionate about helping others with this problem. To help people understand more about their sleep issues, Dr Natasha Thandrayen has developed a Diagnostic Sleep assessment, which aims to provide a report on someone's sleep health, and to ascertain the underlying cause, in order for patients to be referred to the correct specialist.
Included in the diagnostic sleep assessment package is:
This is a device which is sent by post directly to your home. It is worn overnight and checks a number of sleep parameters. The sleep study used is the same one that is been validated by the FDA and the American sleep Association and is currently the most widely used sleep study device in the world (WatchPat)
In the morning the data is downloaded online and an independent qualified sleep technician reports the results and the raw data to you. The information you will obtain will be your AHI & RDI which are useful in diagnosing obstructive sleep apnoea and upper airway resistance syndrome. It will also tell the time and frequency of waking up at night, REM sleep and sleeping position. Having all of this information it is vital to make a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea and other issues that could be going on. The WatchPat device also gives an indication of whether or not you may have upper airway resistance syndrome or other sleep disorders such as insomnia, REM associated apnoea, central apnoeas etc.
The raw data will also be provided to you so that you can use this document for future use.
Dr Natasha uses guideline-based questionnaires for discovering more about your sleep. These are medical questionnaires which have been validated for the purpose of picking up sleep conditions such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea and UARS. These questionnaires will be provided to patients prior to the appointment (see below), which will then be discussed during the consultation. This clinical data will be helpful in the appointment to assess the severity of your problems and also allow Dr Natasha Thandrayen to consider referral to specialists who would be best suited to help you. This may include a Respiratory Physician, Sleep Psychiatrist or an ENT Surgeon.
Some preliminary blood tests will be performed prior to the appointment. These are particularly useful in patients with poor sleep caused by restless legs syndrome, insomnia and anxiety. The results of these will be provided at the consultation (see below).
In this consultation Dr Natasha Thandrayen will talk to you about your sleep problems, by explaining the results of your sleep study and your sleep questionnaires, Thereby providing you with advice and options for next steps. Sleep hygiene will also be discussed as this is often helpful in patients with multiple problems.
Once the investigations above have been completed, Dr Thandrayen will discuss your options for onward referral to a specialist. Dr Thandrayen works closely with Sleep Psychiatrists, Sleep Respiratory Consultants, Sleep Neurologists and Sleep ENT Surgeons.
Dr Natasha Thandrayen will also talk to you about other medical conditions that can influence your sleep such as medications. Unfortunately there is not enough time to deal with completely separate medical conditions in this appointment but every effort will be made to help as much as possible.
Sleep assessment - includes 1 hour face-to-face consultation, WatchPat sleep study performed in your own home and initial blood tests. Free onward referral if required.
